George Clark Letters

Letters from George James Clark 1876

From the front of the folder of letters: "Copies of letters from George James Clark to his father George Augustus Clark, the former being one of the eight who answered to the call of H M Stanley to send missionaries to Africa."

George Clark was sent by the Church Missionary Society to work in Africa, in what is now Tanzania; in a place called (then and now) Mpwapwa. You can read more about the Diocese of Mpwapwa today on their website. The Church Missionary Society (CMS) has its archives at the University of Birmingham.

His letters to his father were copied out by hand many years ago (well before computers were thought of) and it is these copies that have been transcribed and placed here. They are as the originals: one or two words were unreadable and are marked with ? marks; I have also added paragraph breaks as the letters contained none (to save paper?) and were thus very difficult to read.

As far as I know, George Clark's health failed after a short time in Africa and he returned to England.

Below is a map, extracted from a book by HM Stanley, showing the area of his journey from Zanzibar to Mpwapwa.

I hope to eventually plot George Clark's route on a modern map.
